We have a physician that wants to order a "sleep study". He doesn't care where it is done. The patient prefers the home sleep study, but insurance may not cover that procedure. How should he write the order for the test?
Home sleep studies need to be done by certified companies - and ordered through them. The physician's office would need to order that test through them and provide the office notes, etc. If it is ordered through a sleep lab, the referral goes there with all of the office notes and required documentation. Many of our insurers prefer the home sleep study as it is cheaper. The physician is the one who has to make the determination however, for the patient's condition, which sleep study is appropriate.
