Inactivating expired CPT/HCPCS charge codes

Looking for advise from other facilities as to how long you keep charge codes associated with expired CPT/HCPCS codes active in your Chargemaster before you inactivate the charge codes.


  • We usually wait 30-60 days in case any end of prior year claims need fixed.  I believe we hide the charge code, but do not delete it completely from the system in case we need to reactivate it later for some type of a claim issue.
  • Our system allows us to put in an end date, which keeps it in the system but doesn't show up on any active lists.  It can still be used for any dates of service prior to the end time.
