CMS cancels upcoming bundled payment initiative
In an interesting twist to an already interesting year in healthcare, CMS last week posted their intent to cancel the planned expansion of bundled payments. Right now the only mandatory program is CJR for elective joint replacements in select areas. This program looks at 90-day costs and shares savings with hospitals if they spend less than a target amount.
As of Jan 1, a new program with acute MI, CABG and hip fractures was to start in different areas but also mandatory. But now it is off.
I know many hospitals put great effort into their CJR planning in order to get buy-in from surgeons and others. I wonder how much planning into these programs had taken place in anticipation of January 1. Well, I am sure there are other projects to attack.
