Place of service codes

Is it allowable to use one place of service (POS) codes on 1500 claims billed to government payers and another billed on 1500 claims to commercial payers for the same location of service?

    Your claim should accurately reflect what is done.  That would mean that you would use the same POS code.  The only exception I can possibly think of is if the commercial payer has included something in their claims processing manual where they require a different POS code (perhaps they don't recognize a particular POS code)

    Once reason for a difference by payer is with provider-based departments:  Medicare wants a POS of 22 or 19 for on campus and off campus OP services whereas some commercial payers don't recognize the space as a department of the hospital and require POS 11 for clinic space for the same service
