Provider Education for Coding, Billing, and Documentation

Good morning. I wanted to check and see what other organizations are doing to support provider education on topics of coding, documentation, denials, etc. Do you have an education department or does your provider educators fall under another department? Do you have associates who are dedicated to provider education and feedback? If so, how did you decide how to staff that? Do you have each educator working with a specific number of specialties or a specific number of providers? We are looking to possibly add a more dedicated provider education position/team and I am wondering how other organizations are doing that.

Thank you in advance and I really appreciate any advice.

  • I love the idea of a more centralized area to educate providers. Our education is currently spread out.

We do have a physician advisor, but they don't do much overall education that I'm aware of. Compliance does annual education, as well as education related to specific topics that come up in audits and other findings. Our revenue integrity associates are assigned to specific departments/service lines, and like compliance we will provide education based on topics that come up (denial findings, documentation insufficiencies), sometimes partnering with compliance if the topic warrants both teams. We send out information on coding changes, and will do more formal training when there are big changes (like the EEG Monitoring a few years ago). Our nursing informatics department provides education on the more technical side of things for our nurses, including documentation requirements.

  • Providers as in doctors and NPPs? Oh, doctors love to sit in lectures and be told what to do. 😉

This is one of the primary roles of the physician advisor- educating, informing, updating, supporting the medical staff.

But does your PA have the data to know who to educate? Do your denials get attributed by service line, doctor, type of denial? Do you do internal audits and provide feedback to each doctor? Does HIM do audits for copy/paste? Do you have data on peer to peer outcomes?
