Surgery Picklist

Is the Surgery Picklist sufficient to support supply charges or do they need to be mentioned in the Physician's OP Report? For example, a hemostasis agent was used and charged but the only supporting document is the Surgery Picklist.

Thanks!

  • In my experience, I have never seen a payer accept a surgery picklist as documentation of use of an item. These are typically viewed as the surgeon's preference for what should be set up in the OR based on the surgeon's preference(s). For hemostasis agents, my experience is that the payer is looking for documentation that it was used. I have had them accept documentation by the OR nurses that it was used, but some have wanted to see the physician documenting that he/she used it in the operative site. I have seen them treated the same as an antibiotic irrigation solution - it may have been set up and available, but prove that it was truly used.
