Whole Body DEXA

Please advise how your facility is coding whole body DEXA scans if not performed for body composition. Radiology report reads: Whole body and anterior lumbar DEXA was performed. It is also documented that the scan was "whole body less head."

Comments

  • Why was it done if not for body composition?
  • We perform DXA scans for bone demineralization, as our patients are undergoing large amounts of steroids and chemo and radiation therapies.  We are not performing for the normal body composition scans that many doctor's offices perform.

  • So what you really did was a axial DEXA and an appendicular DEXA at one time. You were looking at the bones and not the whole body. You would use those codes. I have no idea if there is an edit that only allows one or just a price reduction on the second.
