Coding/Charging for Flow Cytometry
At our institution, Flow Cytometry is sometimes performed for both diagnostic immunophenotyping and MRD (minimum residual disease) monitoring on the same specimen on the same DOS. MRD requires different techniques from the immunophenotyping and important technical and interpretative differences exist between diagnostic immunophenotyping and MRD.
Since the Flow Cytometry CPT definitions state First marker (88184) and each additional marker (88185), if the same marker is identified although different flow cytometry techniques are used (1 for immunophenotyping vs. MRD), can both flow cytometry tests be reported separately as if there were multiple markers.
